Two Choices… Two Paths… Two Destinations… Where am I???

Surah Map
(for more information about making a Surah Map, see the Notes on ‘How to Read the Qur’an - Mapping a Surah’, which was the first part of this lecture.)

  1. Name: Surat Az-Zumar. Zumar means groups. Why this name? In the surah, there are two groups: the happy ones and the miserable ones.
  2. Where revealed? Makkah (it is a surah that it will help us build our faith).
  3. Any stories of Prophets: No.
  4. Any parables: Yes.
  5. Revealed before: Surat Saba.
  6. Revealed after: Surat Saad.
  7. First ayah: تَنزِيلُ الْكِتَابِ مِنَ اللَّـهِ الْعَزِيزِ الْحَكِيمِ ﴿١  “The revelation of this book is from Allah, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise”.
  8. Last ayah: ends with Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘alaameen. Very few surahs that end with this.
  9. Connection between beginning and end of Surah: ‘Anzala bil Haqq - It is the truth’ the same sentence is in the beginning and end of the Surah.
  10. Main Message: there are two ways- either you will be in the group taken to Jannah or the other group that is taken to Jahannam. It tells you how you can be from the group that goes to Jannah and how not to be in the group that goes to Jahannam. And the key to this is tawhid: la ilaha illa Allah. That is the key to Jannah.
  11. Number of Ayahs: 75. (next, group them into meaningful sections)
Theme Map
    1. Ayahs 1-4: Tawhid
    2. Ayahs 5-6: Allah & His creation
    3. Ayah 7-9: Examples about human beings on Earth
    4. Ayah 10 : Who He is and what we are
    5. Ayah 11- 15: What Allah commanded the Prophet (salla Allahu alaihi wassalam)

    7. Ayah 23: The effect of the Qur’an
    8. Ayah 24-54: About the two groups of people, and how to be from the group of Jannah
    9. Ayah 53: The ayah of hope
    10. Ayah 54-75: What will happen to the two groups on the Day of Judgement
Ayah 2: Tawhid
  • Surat Az-Zumar is called the Surah of Ikhlas - sincerity.
  • Second Ayah: “Verily it is We Who have revealed the Book to thee in Truth: so serve Allah, offering Him sincere devotion.”
  • Ikhlas is sincere devotion - to do Ibadah purely for Allah.
  • What is Ibadah? If you say Salat, then you are right but that’s only half of it. Ibadah is anything that Allah loves and is pleased with, in your sayings and actions, external and internal.
  • Surat Az-Zumar teaches us Ikhlas in Ibadah - to be sincere to Allah in our worship. But it’s not just in prayer and fasting, etc. It is in all areas of life.
  • For example cooking. Chopping an onion is an action. How can I make it purely for Allah? By making the intention that we are cooking in order to eat to have strength to worship Allah.
  • If I say I am doing this for Allah, no one knows for sure except Allah. What is the proof? The proof that you did it for Allah, is that you won’t get upset when it doesn’t work out.  You will be happy whether you were praised or not praised. You will be happy even if your kids won’t eat your food. Because you know you will get the reward for it anyways.
  • The hardest thing in our deen is our Ikhlas - to do it purely for Allah. What if you are doing if for Allah and for others? The scholars differed - some say that if it is not completely pure for Allah, then you won’t get any reward. But other scholars said that Allah knows we are not angels. Imam Ghazali said you will get rewarded based on the percentage that was for Allah.
Ayah 5: Allah and His creation
  • In ayah 5 Allah says “He has created the heavens and the earth with the truth; He makes the night cover the day and makes the day overtake the night, and He has made the sun and the moon subservient; each one runs on to an assigned term; now surely He is the Mighty, the great Forgiver.”
  • Yukawwir: to make it round, shape it - turn around the day into night, night into day.
  • Ask yourself: Why did He start with night and went to day? Why did He start with sun and then moon? Why did He say ‘yajree - run’? Why did He put ‘The Almighty, the All Forgiving’? How do you feel when you read these two words? It should make you feel awe. Why did he use Ghaffar and not Ghafoor? Ghaffaar is one who is continuously forgiving - that is the strongest way to say forgiving. These are the things you need to reflect on.
  • There are 6 books of Tafseer. Do one ayah a day. Go to the computer and use altafseer.com. Pick one from each category. Knowledge is light (Al ‘ilma nurun). But remember that Allah does not give ‘ilm to those who are disobedient. Imam Malik told Imam Al Shafi’ee ‘O son I see that Allah has given you a light in your heart, don’t extinguish it by a light of disobedience.’
  • Our problem is we don’t understand the Qur’an. The shaytan does not want you and me to understand the Qur’an. Once we understand the Qur’an we are different human beings.
  • The Qur’an has the answers for everything we need in life. If you have the question ‘what am I going to cook today?’ The Qur’an tells you to eat from the pure things that Allah gave you. The message: Allah gave you this food that you cooked, it is not from you, it is from Allah. Allah made it happen. This teaches you Ikhlas - Allah allowed you to work, go to the store, and be able to buy the things you need.
  • That’s why we say In sha’ Allah - If Allah wills. That’s why we say ‘La hawla wa la quwatta illa billah’ - It literally says I can do nothing except by Allah’s help.
  • We have children so that when we are old they will take care of us: this is the statement in absence of ‘la hawla wa la quwatta illa billah’. The real reason to have children is in the Qur’an.
  • How much should I eat? The Qur’an tells us ‘eat and drink but don’t be wasteful because Allah does not love the Musrifeen, the wasteful.
  • What should I wear? The Qur’an tells us ‘take your zeenatakum (beautiful clothes) to the masjid.’
  • When we went and studied for a degree, we put an effort, we liked it and the time went fast. But if you put 1/2 or 1/3 of the efforts you put for dunya to understand the Qur’an you would not be looking at me as if what I’m saying is the first time you hear this.
  • The balance in dunya is lost. All the focus from the morning to the night is dunya. Look at your to-do list and see where is the balance. All this is halal, we need to do these things. But with this where is my Akhira? I’m going to be standing in front of Allah.
Ayah 8: Examples about human beings on the earth
  • “And when some hurt touches man, he cries to his Lord (Allah Alone), turning to Him in repentance, but when He bestows a favor upon him from Himself, he forgets that for which he cried for before, and he sets up rivals to Allah, in order to mislead others from His Path. Say: "Take pleasure in your disbelief for a while: surely, you are (one) of the dwellers of the Fire!"” (39:8)
  • This is you and me in the dunya. This is reality. Go and look at yourself. If something happened to you that you don’t like, for example your son is sick, you take him to the doctor and give him medicine... then you make du’a with full sincerity in your heart. Then Allah lifts the hardship. After that, you completely forget what you said to Allah before. And you let the dunya be equal to Allah. We tell people ‘O this doctor is so smart.’ We say things by the slip of our tongue, so naturally. How can we do this to Allah when He just healed our child? So then Allah tells them - go and enjoy it, enjoy your doctor, you are from the dwellers of the hell fire. Because the key to Jannah is tawhid - the oneness of Allah.
  • A similar message is repeated in ayah 49. “Now, when trouble touches man, he cries to Us: But when We bestow a favour upon him as from Ourselves, he says, "This has been given to me because of a certain knowledge (I have)!" Nay, but this is but a trial, but most of them understand not!” (39:49)
  • For example, a student is praying for a good grade. He gets a good grade then he says ‘I did it from my knowledge.’ This is a statement of arrogance. He should say ‘Allah made me study and made me understand it.’ You can say alhamdulillah, but we need to move beyond that - that Allah made it easy on us. La hawla wa la quwatta illa billah - There is no way or strength except by Allah - we cannot change anything.
  • When we are sick we should say that ‘Allah is Al-Shafee’, the One who cures. Then we take the medicine but say ‘Only through Allah will it work. Allah allowed the doctor to know what is wrong with me.’
  • We need to change the way we talk to ourself. The tongue is the spoon of the heart. Famous saying: when the pot boils, whatever is in it comes out. What is in our heart, comes out on our tongue, and comes out in our actions.
  • All the dialogues are here in the heart. So we need to focus on the aakhirah. Allah does not put me in Jannah or Jahannam, I earn it. No soul will bear a sin from others.
  • We need to focus on which path we will go on - dunya or akhirah, and work hard for it. Believe in what you are doing and ask Allah and He will know. Your hard work will earn Allah’s gratefulness.
  • How can we get to the first path? Worship Allah with full sincerity to Him.
Ayah 23: How the Qur'an affects you
  • “Allah has sent down the best statement, a Book (this Quran), its parts resembling each other in goodness and truth, oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it (when they recite it or hear it). Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah. He Guides therewith whom He pleases and whomever Allah sends astray, for him there is no guide.” (39:23)
  • Here, you have to pay attention because it moves from one group to another. This ayah is talking about the group that will go to Jannah. When they hear the Qur’an they get goosebumps from it - a feeling in their skin. These people have the fear and awe of Allah. Their skin and hearts are affected.
  • When was the last time you had a goosebump from the Qur’an? Maybe in Ramadan in the 27th night when the Imam makes the du’a. In Ramadan, the people get tired during tarawih. Then when witr comes everyone stands up and wants to listen to the du’a and everyone starts crying. SubhanAllah - the words of a human being makes you cry and the words of the Creator does not. The only thing we memorized from the Qur’an is Allah is Ghafooron Rahim.
  • When we read this ayah in the Qur’an, we should ask Allah to make us from these people. First acknowledge that you are not from these people say ‘O Allah I’m not that person, i’m not there yet. O Allah make me from those who when they read the Qur’an they feel it in their skin and hearts.’
Ayah 16: The scariest ayah in the Qur'an
  • “They shall have Layers of Fire above them, and Layers (of Fire) below them: with this doth Allah warn off his servants: "O My Servants! then fear ye Me!"” (39:16)
  • This is the scariest ayah in the Qur’an. When you read it say ‘O Allah protect us.’
  • There will be layers of clouds made of fire above them. And underneath them another layer of clouds of fire. So they are stuck. When you are going in an airplane between the clouds remember this ayah.
  • Allah is saying - ‘this is what I’m telling you so you will be scared, so you will be in awe of me.’ It’s like when a mom tells her child - listen to me, if you don’t listen to me I will put you in time out. But Allah uses the words ‘Ya ‘ibadee fattaqoon - O my servants fear me.’
  • This is choice 1 - then Allah talks about the other choice. You choose.
  • Those who have taqwa from Allah, they are given mansions built for them, layers of mansions, rivers flow under them, and the promise of Allah (Allah will never go back on a promise).
  • Do you want clouds of fire or mansion? Of course we want mansions - then why are we not doing it?
Ayah 53: The most hopeful ayah in the Qur'an
  • Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah . Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful." (39:53)
  • This is the most hopeful ayah in the Qur’an. Here Allah is talking with you personally and giving you a statement of love. ‘O my servants, even though you have sinned, do not despair from the mercy of Allah. Allah forgives everything. Verily He is All Forgiving, All Merciful.
  • This ayah was revealed because a man said ‘I have done it all, will Allah forgive me?’ So Allah replied with this ayah.
  • What should we learn from this ayah?
  • First, we should not despair. One of the tricks of the shaytan is to make you lose hope and think it’s impossible. Once you start feeling this way, then you will keep doing more sins, and that’s what shaytan wants.
  • We should ask Allah ‘O Allah what should I do? You are waiting for me to come to you.’
    • Inaba - turn to Allah fully with sincerity
    • Taaib - repents only
    • Muneeb - turns to Allah with sincerity, repents, AND doesn’t want to do it again.
  • We should not say I will put the hijab when I’m 25 - you have no idea if you will get to 25. Don’t put it off, do it before it’s too late.
  • Follow the best of what has been sent to you - the Qur’an. Follow it before the punishment is going to come. Maybe there is no tomorrow. One day we will wake up dead. Turn quickly - do it now before it’s too late.
  • This hopeful ayah is followed by a dialogue between Allah and the group that is going to Jahannam.
Ayah 56 - 58: Regret
  • On that day, we will be wailing and regretting. We will be saying ‘woe on me, how much have I lost and wasted from Allah’s rights. And I was taking it lightly (saakhireen) saying to myself: so what if I don’t wear hijab, so what if I watch this haram, so what if I do interest...’
  • On that day, we will be saying ‘if Allah had guided me I would have been excellent. If they just send me back and give me one more chance, I will be the best mu’min.’ Allah answers and says ‘No, these are just words you are saying. You cannot return now, there’s no more chances.’ Tawba is only when you are breathing, still alive.
  • When we read this dialogue, we should say ‘O Allah, I don’t want to be from those people.’
  • We have everything we need to be a mu’min, we’re just missing the desire. Don’t you want to have a good house in Jannah? Where we will be sitting with the Sahaba and the Prophets and be able to see Allah? Allah tells us give me just a little and see what I will do for you.
  • Allah has made it very easy for us to go to Jannah. Allah multiplies every good deed you do by 10. So to go to Jahannam, it means that for every good deed you do you are doing 10 bad.
  • If you put your beauty and your comfort equal to Allah, then everything good you do will have no weight. Because worship is not only Salat and Siyam, it is everything in our life. Allah ordered us to worship Him and be grateful for everything He gave us: eyes, time, health, tongue.
  • Hadith: take advantage of 5 before 5.
    • Youth before old age: Fasting, Salat, Hajj are easier when you are younger then when you are older.
    • Health before sickness: Don’t say it’s just sunnah, do it, you don’t know if you will be able to do it tomorrow.
    • Free time before you get busy: before you get married or have kids
    • Wealth before Poverty.
  • Don’t look at the sin, look at who you are disobeying.
  • When we are going to meet someone, we put in so much effort. But for Salat we do nothing. Because we don’t feel it.
  • Ali (Radi Allahu ‘anhu), his face would become pale after making wudu, they asked him why and he said ‘do you know between Who’s hands I am going to stand?’ Take 1 second and feel that Allah is looking at you. You cannot blink or move.
  • We are making partners with Allah: making our children the same as Allah and they don’t even know who He is.

  • “And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers." (39:65)
  • All the wealth we have, everything we have is going to be gone. The heavens will be folded in His right hand.
Ayah 68 - 75: The two groups in the Akhirah

  • Then Allah takes you and me to the akhirah. The trumpet blows. Who ever is in the heavens and the earth will become sleepy (sa’iq) and will stand still, except those he willed. Then it will be blown again, then they will be waiting, standing and looking. (39:68) This is what keeps me from disobeying Allah. I think about everyone standing up looking.

  • The earth will be lighted and all the books, messengers, and martyrs will come. Then the judgement time will come where everyone will be judged by the truth - there will be no injustice in this day. Remember this when you go to Hajj or anytime you see millions of people. (39:69)
  • Then every single soul will be asked. Wow- Allah will ask each person one by one. How is He going to do this? Just like He gave them sustenance one by one, He will ask them one by one. Everyone will get what they deserve, and He knows everything. (39:70)
  • Now the groups: either you pass or you fail. If they fail, they will be standing in line for something scary. Under their feet doors will open and they will go down suddenly. Then the door-keeper asks them ‘Didn’t messengers come to you and recite the words of Allah and give you warning of what’s going to happen to you?’ They say ‘Yes they did. What Allah said is true and we deserve this.’ Then he will tell them ‘Okay go enter it, and live there forever for your arrogance.’ (39:71,72) It is arrogance because they thought they know everything and don’t need Allah.

  • The second line has the people waiting for Jannah. It uses the same words as the other ayah. While you wait, you will see the gates opening. The walk there will be joy. The door will be open. Then the door-keeper tells them ‘Salaamun peace be upon them. Enter forever.' The first thing they reply: 'All praise to Allah - He fulfilled His promise and gave us jannah. What a glad tiding for those who worked hard.’ (39:73, 74)
The last ayah:

  • And you will see the angels surrounding the Throne, exalting [Allah] with praise of their Lord. And it will be judged between them in truth, and it will be said, "[All] praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds." (39:75)
  • This is a beautiful scene - you see the angels surrounding the throne of Allah. They glorify Allah. All the judgement is done. All praise goes to Allah.

Dunya or Akhirah?

  • Which one do you want to be? Of course we want to be from the purified ones, for whom the doors of Jannah are opened, with mansions and rivers, and be able to see Allah.
  • Either you are safe in dunya and afraid in akhirah, or afraid in dunya and safe in akhirah. You have to be afraid in one of them. Say: Allah is Ghafoorun Raheem (The Forgiving, The Merciful, Al-Razzaaq (The Provider), Al-Kareem (The Generous).
  • The only thing He wants from us is just to start something. If we do one good deed, Allah multiplies it by 10. You just need to want it. May Allah help us to do it. May Allah help us see this as if it is reality.
